Night Stalker-Remembrance

Published by sunnflr at 12:26 pm under flash fiction Edit This

This is my newest contribution the the Weekend Wordsmith prompt. It’s a continuation of the Night Stalker story. You can read the first part here if you missed it.

Nathaniel awakened from another restless night. His victims haunt his dreams. When all his defenses are down, his soul is laid bare before them. They whisper of dreams lost and lives ruined. Of all he’s taken away. He tries to see them, bring back their end, but they always stay just out of sight. Always elusive, keeping themselves from him. What they should have done in the first place.

He knows this is his punishment, the torture his soul endures each night. Some of the others try to deny it. They like to talk of being immortal, the bearers of pain, not the recipients. How theirs is the strongest race, the most fearsome creatures to tread the night. They can’t stand the slightest weakness in themselves. But he can see the memories in their eyes. How they jump when someone whispers in their ear. Their souls hear the voices of the dead too.

On the nights with fresh kills, the voices are quieter. New blood erasing the past. All accept the children…
